Ganga promenade on the anvil

PATNA: National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has got a detailed project report (DPR) prepared to develop a promenade (walkway), plant trees and construct recreation clubs along the Ganga in the city.

The DPR has been completed by architectural consultancy firm, Sen & Lall Consultants. Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) will be implementing the Rs 125-crore project after NGRBA gives its final nod.

Centre rejects demand for special status to Bihar

The Centre on Friday rejected the demand for a special status to Bihar but said it would do everything possible for the development of the state. “We have been approving projects proposed by the Bihar government and will try to promote development of the state to the extent possible,” minister of state for planning Ashwani Kumar said during a discussion on a Private Member’s Resolution on granting special status to the state.

PATNA: Madhya Pradesh government, along with a few other states, might have been among the firsts to introduce and implement Right to Public Services (RTPS) Act, but the Nitish Kumar government would rank as the first in the country to put into place a well laid out arrangement using its own specially made ‘adhikaar’ software to provide mandated timely services asked for by the Bihar citizenry from officials down to the block level under the Bihar RTPS Act.

PATNA: Reams have been written about lack of governance during the 15-year rule of the RJD that turned Bihar into a basket case between 1990 and 2005.

A Bihar bureaucrat, currently on leave in the UK for scholarly pursuits, has researched into the State’s failures during the period and concluded that an incapacitated government was all part of RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s grand design of governance.

PATNA: Bihar has changed a lot in the last half-a-decade; the CM has done incredible work. The level of corruption and crime has gone down remarkably, which is why I have come here, said Robert Orris Blake, assistant secretary, south and central, Asian affairs, US government, during his visit to Patna on Saturday.

Speaking at an interactive session ‘American corner’ here at the Indian Institute of Business Management (IIBM), Blake said, “The state’s development is being noticed all around the world as it has successfully created a niche for itself at the international level and we are here to explore areas of possible cultural interaction.” Bihar has lots of talent, and its people are hard working, he said.

It’s mid-March in Muzaffarpur, and the lychee trees are almost in bloom in this remote corner of northern India. When the flowering begins, beekeepers like Manoj Kumar Singh will take their hive boxes to the edges of the nearby orchards, leaving their bees to produce the region’s renowned lychee honey. Beekeeping is a tradition in Muzaffarpur, and for decades, so was poverty. “If you had guests, you’d wonder, How are we even going to offer them a cup of tea?” he says. But honey prices have tripled in the past few years, and that’s afforded Singh, 33, enough income to hire a full-time employee, purchase new plots of land, build an addition to his brick house and buy a new motorbike to ride around his village.
